The Arkansas Purple Star School Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation’s armed forces. Purple Star awardees receive a special Purple Star recognition to display in their building and are recognized on the Arkansas Department of Education Division of Elementary and Secondary Education website.

Meet Our School Military Liaison
Mrs. Beth Hendrix serves as the Sylvan Hills Elementary School Military Liaison. Mrs. Hendrix is our K-5 music teacher and this is her 8th year at our school and her 11th in Pulaski County Special School District. Mrs. Hendrix is the spouse of SSG(Ret) Gregory Hendrix and mom to two boys who were both born at Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia. Mrs. Hendrix is also a veteran of the United States Army where she played clarinet in the Army Ground Forces Band at Fort McPherson, Georgia. Mrs. Hendrix is so excited and proud to work with military children and families to give them the help and support they need. PCSSD Board Resolution in Support of Military Families
WHEREAS, more than 14,000 Arkansans exhibit profound courage and selflessness by serving in the armed forces; and
WHEREAS, more than 5,200 military children attend public schools in the State of Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, approximately 220 military children are enrolled in Pulaski County Special School District; and
WHEREAS, Sherwood is home to a large number of military families due to its close proximity to Little Rock Air Force Base and Camp Robinson; and
WHEREAS, military children face unique challenges related to military transitions and parental deployment; and
WHEREAS, military children and their families serve as an essential source of support and encouragement for armed service members; and
WHEREAS, military children should be acknowledged for the sacrifices they make and celebrated for the courage they display as the children of our nation's armed service members; and
WHEREAS, Sylvan Hills Elementary School is committed to meeting the unique needs of all students, especially those of military families.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pulaski County Special School District Board of Education recognizes and salutes military children and expresses its support for military children and families.
