Sylvan Hills High School senior Alivia Freeman has been named a recipient of the prestigious Gates Scholarship, a highly selective, full-ride scholarship awarded to outstanding high school seniors from houses with limited income who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and perseverance.
Freeman, a dedicated student in the school’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, earning a 4.08 weighted GPA and ranking 13th in her graduating class. AVID is a nationally recognized college readiness program that equips students with the skills and support necessary to succeed in rigorous coursework and pursue higher education.
Throughout her high school career, Freeman has challenged herself with advanced coursework, including AP and concurrent credit classes, while actively participating in a biomedical science pathway. Her academic accomplishments are complemented by honors such as membership in the National Honor Society, recognition as an AR Data Health Scholar, and certifications in CPR and Stop the Bleed.
As a Gates Scholar, Freeman will attend Xavier University of Louisiana, where she plans to pursue a major in Public Health. Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, Xavier is widely recognized as a national leader in preparing African American students for careers in medicine and the health sciences. The university consistently ranks among the top institutions in the nation for producing graduates who go on to complete medical school, offering rigorous academics, strong faculty mentorship, and a supportive environment tailored for students pursuing healthcare careers.
“Alivia is a hardworking and thoughtful student who has grown tremendously during her time in high school,” said one of her educators. “Her dedication to her education and her ability to overcome challenges make her truly deserving of this honor.”
The Gates Scholarship, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, covers the full cost of attendance not already covered by other financial aid and supports students throughout their college journey, including leadership development and academic guidance.
